Every country claims to be a year-round destination. Kenya genuinely is — but each season offers something different, and picking the right month for your priorities makes the difference between a good trip and the trip of a lifetime. Here’s the guide we give our own friends.
January–February: the bright secret. Dry, warm and green after the short rains, with animals concentrated at water sources and superb visibility. Fewer crowds than the migration months and often better prices. Our pick for photographers and honeymooners.
March–May: the long rains. Afternoon downpours, some remote camps close, and roads in the parks get sticky. But: the lowest prices of the year, dramatic skies, newborn animals, and landscapes so green they look painted. If your budget is tight and your spirit is flexible, this is your window — and mission work continues comfortably, since projects pause for rain, not for the season.
June: the quiet gem. The rains end, the plains are lush, temperatures are cool and pleasant, and the crowds haven’t arrived. Arguably the best value-to-experience ratio of the year.
July–October: the Great Migration. More than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra pour into the Masai Mara from the Serengeti, with dramatic river crossings typically between late July and September. This is the safari the documentaries are made of — and everyone knows it, so book 4–6 months ahead and expect peak prices. Worth it? Completely.
November–December: the short rains and the festive rebound. Brief showers refresh the land in November (excellent birding as migratory species arrive), and by mid-December Kenya sparkles for the holidays — beach-and-bush combinations with Diani or Watamu are magical, and Christmas worship with a Kenyan congregation is an experience mission travelers never forget.
For mission teams specifically: school-based projects fit best during Kenyan school terms (roughly January–March, May–July, September–October), while youth camps shine in the school holidays of April, August and December. We’ll match your project to the calendar when we plan together.
The honest bottom line: if you want the migration, come July–October and book early. If you want value, light and elbow room, come January–February or June. And if you can only come in the rains — come anyway. Kenya in the rain is still Kenya.
